CHALLENGE

In 2022, Network Rail awarded Centregreat the contract to deliver the ‘Fixing Your Workplace’ programme across Wales. This programme required us to design, construct and maintain built assets (six maintenance delivery units and 54 signal boxes) across the country, to improve the quality of workplaces for frontline staff. This was a high-priority programme for the client, who was eager to improve the working conditions of both offices and critical assets, but who also had to balance budgetary constraints and the roundthe-clock demands of providing critical infrastructure assets and services.

Approach & Outcomes

Centregreat carefully planned works on critical rail assets to minimise disruption for staff and passengers. By conducting detailed site surveys, separating the programme into regional phases, and coordinating closely with the supply chain, we ensured efficiency and compliance with NR standards. Our design team identified value engineering opportunities, generating over £20,000 in cost savings.

Strong communication – including daily site dialogues and weekly progress meetings – kept stakeholders informed and in control, with our processes later adopted by NR as best practice. Works were delivered during tight possession timescales with zero accidents across 30,000+ person-hours.

Our expertise in maintaining heritage structures, including Grade II listed assets, ensured sensitive yet effective restoration using specialist methods. Ultimately, the project was delivered safely, efficiently, and under budget.
