Abergavenny Station Access for All,
Monmouthshire
Centregreat Rail is delivering a new accessible footbridge and lifts to connect platforms, removing barriers for passengers and improving inclusivity as part of the UK Government’s AfA programme.
Background
The Access for All programme, launched under the Government’s Inclusive Transport Strategy in 2018, aims to provide obstacle-free, step-free routes across railway stations in the UK. Funded by the Department for Transport (DfT), the programme is being rolled out during Control Period 6 and covers both large-scale infrastructure upgrades and smaller accessibility improvements.
Abergavenny Station was identified as a priority location due to its passenger volume and existing access challenges. Centregreat Rail was appointed to deliver the construction works, which include the installation of a new accessible footbridge and lift system connecting platforms one and two. The project highlights the collaborative effort between government, Network Rail, and private sector contractors to ensure the rail network meets modern accessibility standards.
Outcomes
Once completed, the scheme will provide a fully accessible route between platforms, ensuring passengers with mobility needs have safe and convenient access. Beyond improving inclusivity, the project is expected to encourage greater use of rail services, reduce reliance on car travel, and contribute to the UK’s wider sustainability goals.
The Abergavenny AfA project demonstrates how targeted infrastructure investments can significantly improve passenger experience, strengthen community connectivity, and support a greener, more inclusive transport system.
